Looking for a walk full of charm and history during your stay at Le Mas Aigaliers? Head to Le Castellas, a former 12th century fortress tucked just behind the old village.
Now in ruins, this quiet yet powerful site offers breathtaking panoramic views over the rolling hills and classic Provençal landscapes. It’s about a 15 to 20 minute uphill walk from Le Mas, a gentle effort, well rewarded at the top.
Best enjoyed at sunset, when the golden light brings the stonework and scenery to life.
Le Castellas was destroyed around 1380 during the Tuchin Revolt, a peasant uprising against heavy taxes. What remains still reveals the defensive architecture of the time. Access is free, but caution is advised, the terrain is uneven and some areas can be hazardous.
A hidden gem for lovers of history, old stones… and wide-open views.
